Declarations of war & pie in the sky
South African finance minister Tito Mboweni's 2020 Budget was a classic example of pie in the sky and it therefore — and unsurprisingly — triggered declarations of war from the labour movement. The only fulsome support seems to have come from from those at the top of the financial pile.

What the latest Budget has done is, on the one hand, to placate the money lenders and the business elite while, on the other, further alienating and angering the majority of South Africans. The time bomb is continuing to tick. But for how much longer before an explosion occurs?
A Budget by any other name would smell the same

THE more things change, the more they stay the same. This applies not only to the latest South African Budget, but to almost all such economic policy statements as finance ministers continually repeat variations on the same failed remedies, apparently in the hope of different outcomes.
