Several trade unions and many protesting Fees Must Fall students in South Africa directed their anger at the wrong targets over the past week since the fundamental problem is democratic governance. Unless this is dealt with, the rot in the body politic will remain.

As campus chaos continues in South Africa, a simple fact should be borne in mind: the country has sufficient funds to provide free, quality education for all. However, the political will to source and to allocate such funds is currently missing.

The current crisis on South African university campuses is, in many ways, a repeat of the 1998 protests, the main difference being the existence and widespread use now of social media and mobile telephony programs such as Whatsapp.

With the insecurity and fear still being spread by the global economic crisis, all the resentment and tensions of recent decades is coming to the surface in South Africa and the recent campus upheavals are a good — and nihilistic — example.
