The mass turnouts on the protest strike called by Saftu on Wednesday in major centres around the country revealed that the newest federation is probably here to stay. And the sniping from the sidelines by Cosatu and Fedusa did nothing to boost their fortunes. However, amid the tension and turmoil there was some hope.

Potential SA strike turmoil & the 2019 elections

The response to the April 25 general strike call by the SA Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) and the turnouts and attitudes expressed at coming May Day rallies should provide a good indication of the mood of a widely disgruntled labour movement. It may also provide a clear union response to President Cyril Ramaphosa's newly announced Youth Employment Scheme.

Trade union pickets — for the first time in a 134-year history — confronted the fashionistas and glitterati who turned up for one of the premier events in the South African horse racing calendar, the Cape — now Sun — Met in Cape Town. But, so far, there has been little response to this action at the annual his mink and manure fiesta.

In many ways the relationship between members of the governing, ANC-led alliance and the unions that stand in opposition is, on one level, an apparent repeat of the situation that existed 30 and more years ago when internal "workerists" were opposed by the exiled ANC alliance.

There is nothing new in the recipes proposed by President Cyril Ramaphosa to remedy the damage done over the past decade to South Africa's state institutions and the economy. They are recipes that trade unions across th board have already rejected.
