We are all trapped in an economic system which, if its demands were judged by human standards, it would almost certainly be regarded as criminally insane. It is a system that insists that those within it who wield power and influence operate in a manner that is dangerously harmful to the majority of people and often to the entire ecosystem.
Even those individuals with some authority who, through moral conviction, wish to do good, are forced to participate in destructive behaviour or themselves go under. This argument, referring to corporations, was made brilliantly by Canada-based legal expert, Joel Bakan, in his 2004 classic, The Corporation — the Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power.
This week, the reality of the system was laid bare in a series of questions raised in a letter to me from a farmer and Fin24 reader, Steven Versveld who employs 125 workers and grows fruit on his farm in South Africa’s Western Cape provnce. Like most individual farmers — as opposed to managers of corporate-owned agribusiness — he constantly has to deal with balancing wages to be paid, number of workers required and the need to remain profitable enough to stay in business.
Unlike many farmers — and he is certainly not alone in this — Steven Versfeld does not dismiss the demand by unions for a living wage for all workers as an attack on farmers and the business of agriculture. He wants to “pay a decent wage” and also create employment on the land.
But the nature of farming is seasonal. And every year, especially in the case of grapes and various fruits, there is a need for more labour in the four to five-month picking season. With our growing army of the unemployed, it is available at almost any price.
“Every year, during at harvest time, I have people queueing for work,” writes Versfeld. “Turning people away is tough when one sees how desperate they are for work.”
The simple truth is that there are more people than there is work available and the farmer, like any employer, does not need to employ any more workers than necessary for the job at hand. And now, with the rapid advances in technology, employers, almost across the board, can radically reduce the demand for workers by turning to automation and mechanisation.
In the agricultural sector, as Versfeld notes, this is no more more obvious than with grape harvesting. “When I drive through the Breede River Valley I am struck by how, ten years ago, the vineyards were bustling with large groups of people picking grapes,” he writes.
He adds: “Today there are a handful of grape harvesters doing the same job, often manned by the farmer himself.” As Versfeld discovered, each harvester replaces a team of up to 50 pickers, who would have worked for three months, earning a total of perhaps R450 000, or some R3 000 a month each.
Even if a farmer employed a harvester driver, the cost would only be some R65 000 a year, a saving of perhaps R385 000 that would pay off the capital expenditure on the harvester. “Is it ethically better to pay fewer people more even if that means that the farmworker community as a whole earns less?” asks Versfeld.
It is a legitimate question. And one that has not been adequately dealt with either by government or the unions. It is also a question that should not arise in a country constitutionally dedicated to the principle of egalitarianism, even in an economic system that is demonstrably insane.
That it does arise is a function of the inability of government to ameliorate the excesses of the system. Yet there are steps that can — and should — be taken.
For example, as Versfeld and other fruit farmers are aware, only 5% of the retail value of their produce returns to them to sustain themselves, their farms and farm workers. Retailers and middle men cream off the profits.
Here is an area in which government, perhaps encouraged by the unions, could take steps to introduce an element of stability and fairness to those who suffer most in this global asylum, a step forward perhaps to dealing with the lunacy itself.

Imagine the case of a (say hypothetical) farmer who is not driven by profit. He still has to sell his product at a competitive price for the farm to remain financially viable. He has to do this because he is at one end of a supply chain with us, as consumers at the other end.
Like the farmer, we consumers also want to make the best use of our resources. As consumers, we are likely to buy a cheaper product or a substitute if we don’t like the price of his product by the time it arrives on the shelf. We are likely to label the farmer as being greedy for wanting to maximise his resources while we are simply shopping smart. he has to control his costs so that we can have affordable, even cheap, food.
The consumers’ conscience can, however, be pricked. This happened in the case of battery poultry. Go to the supermarket and you can have free-range and/or eggs from grain-fed birds at a premium price…and people do buy them.
As I see it, something similar needs to be done with, say the fruit farmer and that is to encourage consumers to buy fruit hand-picked in South Africa. This would be coupled to a campaign that the premium paid is worthwhile because of the scourge of unemployment: if nothing else, an appeal to patriotism.
I think the notion of “…. government, perhaps encouraged by the unions, could take steps to introduce an element of stability and fairness” is both vague and futile. The fundamental problem is the consumer or, should I say, us consumers

Thank you Roger. Your response is the sort of reaction I was hoping to encourage. I agree that I gave no detail about what sort of steps government and unions might take. But this is not vague: it merely requires suggestions as to what steps should be taken.
In previous articles I have dealt with the fact that the supply chain is distorted, with major supermarkets (especially abroad) being able to dictate because of their purchasing power, prices. I have also mentioned that in the case of farmers, only about 5% of the retail price ever reaches the producer.
There is also the question of clearly subsidised imports, ranging from confectionery to canned goods and even garlic, undercutting local production. The dumping of chicken has also been quite widely flagged. So there are certainly measures that can, and perhaps should, be taken.
